Dialysis

A dialysis machine mimics some of the functions of a human kidney.  For a dialysis treatment the machine pumps 80 to 100 liters of patient blood through a filter system that removes urinary excreted substances. Due to a high number of patients and a treatment time of 3 to 4 hours, dialysis machines are often running 24 hours a day,7 days a week, which demands a very high machine life time. The different pump drives therefore have to remaini reliable during more than 40,000 hours and, for patient comfort, the noise must be reduced to a minimum. The space in hospitals and clinics is expensive and in order to minimize the required floor space for the machine, the size of pump drives and other components of the machine must be as small as possible.
